Subterranean termites build pencil-width mud tubes along your foundation, walls, or crawl space to travel between soil and wood. These are the most reliable sign of an active infestation.

Tap on wood beams, door frames, or baseboards. A hollow or papery sound means termites have eaten the interior while leaving the surface intact — a classic sign of drywood termites.

Termite swarmers shed their wings after finding a new nesting site. Piles of small, equal-length wings near windowsills or doors mean a colony has recently established nearby.

Drywood termites push their fecal pellets out of small holes in wood. These tiny, six-sided pellets resemble sawdust or coffee grounds and often appear in small piles below infested wood.

Moisture produced by termites inside walls causes paint to bubble, peel, or look water-damaged — even without any plumbing leak. This is often mistaken for a roof or pipe issue.

As termites consume wood and produce moisture, door frames and window frames can warp. If doors or windows suddenly stick or don't close properly, termite damage may be the cause.

In Arizona, termite swarms typically occur between March and June, often after the first warm rain. Seeing flying termites — especially indoors — is a strong indicator of a nearby colony.
